Ireland — FAQs for Indian Students

Why choose Ireland for higher studies?
Ireland offers top universities, many 1-year Master’s programs, and a 2-year post-study work visa—making it fast, high-ROI, and career-focused for Indian students.
Do I need GRE/GMAT to study in Ireland?
Generally, no GRE/GMAT is required. Focus on a strong academic profile and English tests (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/Duolingo). Note: UCD & TCD typically require GMAT for their MBA programs.
Which English tests are accepted?
IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and Duolingo English Test are widely accepted. Minimum scores vary by course and university.
My English score is low—what can I do?
Many universities offer Pre-sessional English programs to help you meet requirements and prepare for academic study.
How much of a study gap is acceptable?
Gaps are acceptable when explained—e.g., employment, health, family reasons, vacation, or business ventures.
What scholarships can I apply for?
Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships (HEA), Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme, and IRC/IRCHSS-linked awards. Around 60 students receive up to €10,000/year.
How much does a Master’s cost?
Universities: €12,000–€36,000 (₹9.97L–₹28.89L)
Institutes of Technology: €12,000–€17,000 (₹9.97L–₹13.63L)
Colleges: €13,000–€15,000 (₹10.8L–₹12L)
1-year vs 2-year Master’s—what’s better?
A 1-year Master’s helps you return to work sooner, reduces living costs, and still completes 90 credits—great for your CV and loan management.
What is the post-study work visa?
Graduates typically receive a 2-year post-study stay (Third-Level Graduate Scheme) to secure skilled employment and progress to permits.
Critical Skills vs General Employment Permit?
Critical Skills: For roles on the Critical Skills Occupations List (e.g., ICT, engineering); pathway to long-term residence.
General: Broader roles not on the ineligible list.
How strong is Ireland’s industry ecosystem?
Home to top global software, tech, pharma, and med-tech leaders—excellent for placements and graduate roles.
Can I work part-time while studying?
Yes—up to 20 hours/week during term. Reference minimum wage: €11.30/hour. (Check current rules/holidays for higher limits.)
Are Irish universities globally ranked?
Yes. Five are in the top-500 globally. Notables: TCD, UCD, UCC, University of Galway, UL, DCU, Maynooth, TUDublin.
Is there a strong Indian community?
Yes—fast-growing since 2016, especially in Dublin. Indian graduates receive significant numbers of work permits across sectors.
