How Indian LLB Graduates Can Become Lawyers in the UK
Want to become a lawyer in the UK? A 2025 guide for Indian LLB graduates
If you’ve completed your LLB in India and now want to practise in the UK, the path is clear—but it depends on which profession you choose and how you plan your steps. The UK has a split profession: Solicitors (client-facing, transactional and litigation prep) and Barristers (courtroom advocacy). Since the move to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), the process for Indian LLB grads is more flexible, letting you combine exam prep with paid legal experience.
This guide simplifies the choices you’ll make—Solicitor vs Barrister, timelines, what counts as Qualifying Work Experience (QWE), where the SQE fits in, and how a UK LLM can support (but not replace) qualification. You’ll also find a curated list of IP/IT-focused LLMs to deepen expertise and build networks while you prepare.
At a glance
- ✔️ Eligibility: Your Indian LLB meets the degree requirement for the solicitor route.
- ✔️ Primary route (Solicitor): Pass SQE1 and SQE2, complete 2 years of QWE, then character & suitability checks.
- ✔️ Typical timeline: ~12–24 months depending on study pace, exam windows, and QWE.
- ✔️ Where you test: SQE1 and written SQE2 run at Pearson VUE (international), SQE2 oral is held in select UK centres.
- ✔️ LLM? Optional. Great for UK exposure, networking, and sometimes visa timing, but it doesn’t replace SQE or QWE.
- ✔️ Alternative path: Barrister route via the Bar Standards Board (may require BTT assessments and pupillage).
Most Indian LLB grads qualify as solicitors in England & Wales by passing the SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examination), completing two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE), and passing character/screening checks. An LLM can help with visas or study time—but it’s not mandatory for qualification.
Decide: Solicitor or Barrister?
What they do: Advise clients, draft documents, negotiate deals, manage cases; advocacy in lower courts (and higher with extra rights).
Usual route: SQE + QWE + screening (England & Wales).
What they do: Courtroom advocacy and specialist opinions, often instructed by solicitors.
Route for overseas lawyers: Transfer via BSB (may require BTT assessments and pupillage). If not yet qualified abroad, follow academic → vocational Bar course → pupillage.
I want to become a Solicitor
The 4 things you need to qualify (England & Wales)
-
A degree (any subject) or equivalent
Your Indian LLB satisfies this requirement. -
Pass SQE1 and SQE2
SQE1: two FLK papers (MCQs) on core legal knowledge.
SQE2: practical skills—interviewing, advocacy, drafting, research, etc. -
Complete two years of QWE
Flexible—before/during/after exams; up to 4 placements. Must be signed off by an England & Wales solicitor (or COLP) with knowledge of your work. -
Character & Suitability + Screening
Background checks (e.g., DBS/overseas police certificates) and a suitability assessment before admission.
Can Indian experience count as QWE?
Yes—QWE is flexible. Legal roles in India or elsewhere can count if they develop solicitor competencies and are properly supervised and signed off by an England & Wales solicitor or a COLP with direct knowledge of your work.
Are there exemptions for Indian advocates?
If you are already a qualified lawyer (enrolled advocate) in India, you may apply to the SRA for exemptions from parts of the SQE. This is evidence-based and considered case-by-case—apply before booking assessments.
Do you need an LLM?
No. An LLM can deepen expertise (e.g., IP/IT, commercial) or help with a UK study visa, but it does not replace SQE or QWE. The SQE is the qualification gate.
How can a UK LLM still help?
- Builds UK law exposure and credibility while you prep for SQE.
- Some LLMs include SQE-aligned modules (e.g., “LLM Legal Practice (SQE1 & SQE2)”).
- Career & networking: may enable Graduate Route (PSW) time to gain QWE, internships, and contacts.
- Employability: paralegal/compliance roles can count as QWE when supervised.
