Why NZ works

Six reasons New Zealand earns a serious look.

Facts, not sales talk — decide for yourself.

🎓

All 8 universities globally ranked

Every NZ university sits in the QS top 500 — Auckland at #65. Quality is consistent across the whole country.

💼

Up to 3-year open work visa

Master's and PhD graduates (30+ weeks of study) get a 3-year Post-Study Work Visa. Open work — no employer sponsorship needed.

20 hrs/week while studying

Work part-time during term and full-time during scheduled breaks. Research Master’s and PhD students can work full-time year-round.

🌿

Safe & English-speaking

Consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world, with a welcoming environment for international students.

💰

More affordable than Australia

Tuition and living costs typically run 15–25% below equivalent Australian programmes. Christchurch and Dunedin are especially cost-friendly.

🧭

Pathway to residency

NZ's Skilled Migrant Category awards points for NZ qualifications — many graduates qualify after 2–3 years of post-study work.

The angle nobody tells you

A PhD in New Zealand costs less than an Indian MBA.

New Zealand charges international PhD students domestic tuition — roughly NZD 7–9K a year instead of the NZD 40K+ international rate. Add full-time work rights while you study, work rights for your spouse, and a 3-year open work visa afterwards — no other English-speaking country matches this for research students.

Questions

Questions we hear most often.

How much does it cost to study in New Zealand from India?
Bachelor's tuition runs NZD 22,000–35,000 per year and taught Master's NZD 26,000–40,000. Living costs are roughly NZD 15,000–20,000 per year. A realistic first-year total is NZD 40,000–60,000 (about ₹20–30 lakh). PhD students pay domestic tuition — only NZD 7,000–9,000 per year.
What IELTS score do New Zealand universities require?
Most universities ask for IELTS 6.0 overall for Bachelor’s and 6.5 (no band below 6.0) for Master’s programmes. Some courses — nursing, teaching, law — require 7.0. PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are widely accepted alternatives.
How does the Post-Study Work Visa work?
If you complete a Master’s or Doctoral qualification with at least 30 weeks of study in NZ, you can work for 3 years on an open work visa — no employer sponsorship needed. For Bachelor’s degrees the visa matches the length of your study.
Is a PhD in New Zealand really charged at domestic fees?
Yes. New Zealand treats international PhD students as domestic students for tuition — roughly NZD 7,000–9,000 per year instead of NZD 40,000+. Your spouse can also apply for an open work visa while you study.
Which intake should I target — February or July?
February is the main intake with the widest course choice; July is a strong second intake for most Master’s programmes. Applications should ideally go in 6–8 months before the intake, so talk to us early.
