New Zealand’s post-study work visa — the current picture
If you complete an eligible degree-level qualification (a bachelor’s or master’s) in New Zealand, you can apply for a Post Study Work Visa of up to 3 years. It is an open work visa — you can work for any employer, in almost any role, without needing a company to sponsor you first. For most Indian students doing a master’s, that three-year runway is the headline advantage: enough time to build real experience and move toward residence through New Zealand’s skilled-migration pathways.
What’s changing on 16 November 2026
Immigration New Zealand has announced new and updated post-study work options taking effect 16 November 2026. Two matter for Indian students:

- Doing a bachelor’s or master’s? Nothing to worry about — you still qualify for the up-to-3-year Post Study Work Visa. That remains New Zealand’s biggest draw.
- Considering a shorter Level 5–7 programme? You now have a fallback — the new 6-month graduate visa — where previously there may have been none. But six months is short; a degree-level qualification still gives you far more runway.
- Choose your qualification level deliberately. Because you only get one post-study visa, the smart move is to pick a programme whose level unlocks the longest work rights for your goals — not just the cheapest or fastest option.
