Why February is the intake to target
New Zealand universities run two main intakes: February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). February is the primary one — classes begin in late February or early March, and it offers the fullest programme list and the largest scholarship rounds. July is popular too, but not every course runs in Semester 2; some specialist and full-year programmes are February-only.

Read the fine print. Competitive programmes — medicine, some health sciences, and popular business and IT master’s — can close much earlier than the general deadline, and a few run only in February. Confirm your specific course’s deadline before you plan around it.

For most students the answer is February — the choice and funding are simply better. July suits those who need extra time to prepare, or who miss the Semester 1 cut-off for a course that also runs in Semester 2.
How to apply for the February 2027 intake — step by step
- Aug–Oct 2026: shortlist your university and course, and get your documents ready — transcripts, degree certificate, SOP and references.
- English test: sit IELTS, PTE or TOEFL (most programmes want IELTS 6.0–6.5). Book early so scores are ready before deadlines.
- By ~Oct–Nov 2026: submit applications. Watch for early deadlines on competitive courses.
- On offer: accept and pay the tuition deposit; confirm any scholarship.
- Arrange funds: tuition + NZ$20,000 living costs for the year, evidenced with genuine savings, fixed deposits, an education-loan sanction, or a scholarship letter.
- Student visa: apply online with your offer, funds and health/insurance evidence. Allow 3–4 months for processing before your February start.

Costs & funds for February 2027
Two numbers matter: what you pay, and what you must show. Postgraduate tuition at New Zealand universities typically runs NZ$28,000–NZ$45,000 a year depending on the course. On top of that, Immigration New Zealand requires proof of NZ$20,000 in living costs for the year (or NZ$1,667/month for shorter courses). You cannot use projected part-time earnings to meet that requirement.
