tmc-ireland-visa-timing-hero

Quick Read

  • Most decisions come through in 24 working days (roughly 5 calendar weeks).
  • Fast 25% — 17 working days. Slow 25% — 31 working days.
  • Most cases land between 17 and 31 working days. A few outliers stretch longer due to document re-submissions.
  • Best months to book VFS: April–May (17–19 working day averages).
  • Slowest months: October–November (35–36 working day averages).
  • INIS application window: earliest 1 April for Sep intake; latest one month before course start. Applications outside this window are rejected.
  • VFS booking window: 7–31 calendar days from today — check yours below.

INIS hard rule — the visa application window.

  • Earliest date to file: 1 April (for September intake).
  • Latest date to file: one month before your course start date.
  • Applications filed outside this window are rejected by INIS — no exceptions, no appeals on this point.

Example: for a course starting 1 September 2026, your application must be lodged between 1 April 2026 and 31 July 2026.

About these numbers. All processing-time data on this page is in working days (Monday–Friday, excluding Indian and Irish bank holidays). Quick conversion: 5 working days ≈ 1 calendar week, and 21 working days ≈ 1 calendar month. So a “24-day” wait is roughly 5 calendar weeks. The interactive checker further down uses calendar days for booking your VFS appointment — that part is straightforward dates from today.

Every Indian family applying for an Ireland student visa wants the same thing: an honest answer to “how long will it take?” INIS's published guideline is 4–8 calendar weeks — correct but unhelpfully wide. Sixty calendar days is twice the speed of fifteen.

We tracked actual VFS-appointment-to-decision time across our Sep 2025 and Jan 2026 cohorts. Here is what the data shows, and a quick checker to confirm your VFS appointment date is within the recommended window.

The headline numbers

The 24-working-day median (~5 calendar weeks) sits comfortably inside INIS's published 4–8 week target. The 17-working-day P25 is just over 3 calendar weeks — faster than INIS's 4-week lower bound. Slow cases (31 working days, ~6 calendar weeks) are still inside the 8-week ceiling. A small number of outliers stretched to 53 working days — almost all of these were re-submission cases where additional documents were requested by the embassy, restarting the analysis clock.

By VFS appointment month

The pattern below shows that the month you book your VFS slot matters as much as the paperwork inside it.

Ireland student visa processing time by VFS appointment month: April 17 working days, May 19, June 22, July 26, August 22, September low data, October 35, November 36, December 30

April vs November is a 19 working-day swing for the same kind of application — that's nearly four extra calendar weeks. The cliff falls between August and October, when offer-holders for the September intake all rush their slots and the visa-officer caseload spikes.

What this means if you're applying

For September 2026 intake (reading this in mid-2026)

  • Book your VFS appointment between mid-May and end of June. Average wait is 17–22 working days — roughly 3.5–4.5 calendar weeks. Your decision lands by mid-July, leaving over a month of buffer before flying.
  • Risky window: late-August VFS bookings. Average rises to 22 working days, and the cliff into 30+ days starts in September. After 20 August, you're cutting close to your departure.
  • Avoid October VFS for Sep 2026 intake. 35 working-day average means a decision in mid-November — orientation week is already over.

For January 2027 intake (planning ahead)

  • Book your VFS in mid-September to mid-November 2026. Decisions in this window typically land before Christmas.
  • Avoid late-November and December bookings — the data shows the slow band extends through year-end.

Check your appointment window

Different question, different unit. The processing-time data above is in working days. The booking-window check below uses calendar days from today — you're picking real dates from a calendar, not visa-officer working days.

Our team recommends booking your VFS appointment between 7 and 31 calendar days from today. Less than 7 days and there's usually not enough time to complete documentation, tuition payment, and loan disbursement. More than 31 days and your university deadlines start drifting out of alignment.

How we measured this

The numbers come from our internal TMC visa decision tracker, covering Indian-resident first-time student visa applications for Ireland from the Sep 2025 and Jan 2026 cohorts. We measure working days (Monday–Friday, excluding Indian and Irish bank holidays) from the VFS appointment date to the embassy decision date (approval or refusal). Cases that needed re-submission for additional documents are included — that's why the slower months stretch beyond the median. Values were capped at 60 working days to filter out data-entry artefacts. To convert: 5 working days ≈ 1 calendar week; 21 working days ≈ 1 calendar month.
