Every year we hear the same worry from Indian students in July and August: “I couldn’t get my file ready for September — have I lost a whole year?” The short answer is no. Ireland runs a January (spring) intake, and for the right student it’s a smart, faster route into a one-year master’s.
But January is not simply “September, five months later.” Fewer universities open it, the course list is narrower, and the deadlines land sooner than most people expect. What is the January intake — and who is it for?
Ireland’s main intake is September; the January intake (sometimes called the spring or February intake) is the secondary window, with courses typically starting in late January or February 2027. It exists mostly in career-focused fields — business, computing, data analytics, cybersecurity and health-technology — rather than across every programme.
It suits three kinds of applicant: students who missed the September 2026 deadline or whose file wasn’t ready; students who finished their bachelor’s mid-year and don’t want to wait until September 2027; and students who simply want to start sooner. Read the fine print. “The university has a January intake” and “your course has a January intake” are two different things. Many programmes are September-only. Always confirm the exact course + campus + deadline before you build your file — that one check saves students a wasted application every year.

How to apply for the January 2027 intake — step by step
The process is the same as September, just on a tighter clock. Working backwards from a late-January start:
- Now – November 2026: shortlist your course and university, and get your documents ready — transcripts, degree certificate, LORs and a Statement of Purpose.

- By early December 2026: submit applications (ATU’s application fee is €30). Aim to be in by 4 December so offers land in time.
- On offer: accept, pay the tuition deposit, and confirm your scholarship.

Fees, funds and scholarships for January 2027
The money side is the same as any Irish intake. Postgraduate tuition at technological universities like ATU runs about €12,000–€13,500 a year, lower than most Dublin universities. On top of tuition, you must show maintenance funds — roughly €10,000 for the year under current Irish immigration guidance — as living costs. Scholarships still apply for January starts: ATU’s €3,000 country discount or up to €6,000 on merit is a good example.
